University-licensed Sophos moved from on-campus update servers to the Sophos cloud in Fall 2018.

If you use UA-provided Sophos on your Win PC/Mac on campus or at home,
you need to remove Sophos and install the Sophos Central client

Gcc is part of Xcode. You can download it from the App Store. Once it is installed and you start it, it will ask you to install command line tools. Once it is installed, you can open a terminal window and check if it has been installed:

which gcc

It should show: /usr/bin/gcc

Fortran is not available with Xcode... you have a few options:

1. Download the binaries from gcc.gnu.org:

Binaries available for gfortran

MacOS

The gfortran maintainers offer nice Apple-style installers for:

macOS Sierra (10.12): download gfortran 6.3
OS X El Capitan (10.11): download gfortran 6.1
OS X Yosemite (10.10): download gfortran 5.2 or gfortran 4.9.2
OS X Mavericks (10.9): download gfortran 4.9.0 or gfortran 4.8.2
OS X Mountain Lion (10.8): download gfortran 4.8.2
OS X Lion (10.7): download gfortran 4.8.2

2. You can  also install from other project packing software like macports or homebrew :

same webpage from above:

Other projects packaging GCC (and gfortran) binaries for Mac include:

  • HPC Mac OS X offers GCC builds, which include gfortran
  • MacPorts (package name, e.g., "gcc48") - the fastest way to get a developer version of GCC. MacPorts comes with a packing software, but all software is compiled before installation. For the developer version, the "Portfile" is updated approx. weekly.
  • Fink offers GCC packages (all released versions) - similar to MacPorts, but also offers binaries; it does not have the developer versions, just the releases.
  • via Homebrew

3. Intel Fortran:

Microsoft support and Windows updates for Windows 7 are set to end on January 14, 2020.

If you are running Windows 7, please contact LPL Systems for help upgrading to Windows 10.

As of May 11, 2019, the following client operating system versions may connect to UAWifi:

iPhone:  iOS 11 and up
Android: 6.0 and up
Windows: 10
MacOS: High Sierra (10.13) and up

Devices running older operating system versions will not be able to connect to UAWifi.

This is because the older versions do not offer TLS 1.1 or higher. Transport Layer Security (TLS) provides authentication and data encryption between different devices to provide secure functionality. Per the UA Information Security Office (ISO), TLS 1.0 is no longer considered a secure protocol and cannot provide appropriate data protection.  Therefore, to provide secure accessibility, on May 11, TLS 1.0 was completely disabled on UAWiFi/eduroam.

If your device is running an older version, the solution is to upgrade to the latest operating system.

If your device meets the above criteria but still cannot connect, call UITS 24/7 support at (520) 626-TECH (8324) or chat online on the IT Support website.

LPL Systems strongly recommends that you encrypt your Mac or Windows 10 laptops.

No, please do not upgrade your Mac to Big Sur yet.

Best is to wait until mid-2021, so software vendors can make their applications work with Big Sur.

We know, for example, that Sophos will stop working if you upgrade to Big Sur.

So please stay at Mojave or Catalina until further notice.

If you have any questions, please contact LPL Systems (or PIRL Systems or OREx Systems, as appropriate).
